The Territory of Belfort was the part of the department of
Haut-Rhin which remained French after the annexation of Alsace-Lorraine by Germany, in
1871; due to the heroic 103-day resistance of Colonel Denfert-Rochereau and the city's
defenders.
The territory received the status of department in 1922.
