With an area of 26,013 km², the région of Auvergne has four départements:
Allier (03), Cantal (15), Haute-Loire (43) and Puy-de-Dôme (63).
The regional
prefecture of Auvergne is Clermont-Ferrand.
Neighbouring regions are Bourgogne, Centre, Limousin, Midi-Pyrénées
and Rhône-Alpes.
Auverge is that rocky, volcanic wonder of the Massif Central.
Breathtaking views are afforded from Puy-de-Dôme, an extinct volcano
peaking at 1,465 metres above sea level.
This is hiking territory at its best.

If you're in Paris before you visit Auvergne, be sure to pop in here to see the region on
show. Coming from the Gorges of Allier, from Vichy, la Chataigneraie or Clermont-Ferrand,
the Auvergnats gather together in Paris to share their passion for their own region; to
represent their regional specialities through different events, food and wine tastings,
presentation of tourist products and bookings of promotional vacations.
Bourbonnais, in northern Auvergne, was the birthplace of the
Bourbon dynasty of French Kings. The many châteaux and priories stand witness to its
royal past.
